In what may be one of Bollywood’s biggest reunions, 3 Idiots is officially gearing up for a long-awaited sequel. As per exclusive information obtained by Pinkvilla, the cult classic is finally set to return with its original dream team—Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi—all back under the direction of Rajkumar Hirani. The film will once again be bankrolled by Vidhu Vinod Chopra along with Hirani and Aamir.
According to a source close to the project, the sequel is locked and ready to move forward. Shooting is expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
“The script is finalized, and everyone involved believes they’ve recaptured the heart of the original—its humour, its emotional depth, and its message,” the insider shared.
A Story That Picks Up 15 Years Later
The sequel will continue the journey of Rancho, Farhan, Raju and Pia nearly 15 years after they last met in the film’s memorable climax. The source adds that audiences can expect a fresh adventure that blends the nostalgic warmth of the original with new humour, updated themes and the characters’ evolved lives.
Hirani Finally Revisits the Idea
Rajkumar Hirani reportedly had the idea for a sequel for years, but only recently found the right moment to dive in. After his much-discussed Dadasaheb Phalke biopic was paused, Hirani dedicated himself to expanding the concept of 3 Idiots 2 into a fully realised script.
“He always had a seed of the story, but he wanted something worthy of the film’s legacy,” the source revealed. “Now he believes he has cracked it.”

A Film That Redefined Bollywood
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became a milestone in Indian cinema. It sparked important conversations about academic pressure and the education system, went on to become a cultural phenomenon, and made history as the first Indian film to enter the ₹200-crore club at the domestic box office.
