Aamir Khan Reflects on the Toughest Phase of His Career

Aamir Khan, often hailed as Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist, recently looked back on one of the most difficult chapters of his professional journey— a period marked by consecutive flops and emotional turmoil. Speaking candidly, he revealed that there was a time when his career felt like it was slipping “down the drain,” leaving him so distressed that he would return home and break down in tears.

A Star Is Born—But Challenges Followed

Aamir shot to nationwide fame with his blockbuster debut Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, which instantly established him as a rising star. The success opened many doors, but ironically, not the ones he truly wanted. The directors he admired never approached him, forcing him into a difficult space.

Feeling the pressure of the industry—where actors were signing dozens of films—Aamir agreed to nearly 8–9 projects. But once he got into the grind, he realised he wasn’t built for juggling multiple movies at a time. – Aamir Khan Reflects on the Toughest Phase of His Career

“My Career Felt Like It Was Sinking” — Aamir on His Worst Phase

During his appearance at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2025, Aamir described the turning point that reshaped his approach to filmmaking.

He explained,
“Within the first six to eight months, I understood that three things define a film—its script, its director, and its producer. Unless all three aligned, I wouldn’t take up a project again. After QSQT, during my initial years, I wasn’t happy with what I was doing. My creative sensibilities didn’t match the teams I was working with.”

As the films he had already shot began releasing, they started failing one after another.

“Ek flop hui, phir dusri, phir teesri,” he recalled. “I was called a ‘one-film wonder,’ and honestly, it made sense at the time.”

The remaining films he was still working on were no better. Aamir knew the outcome before they even hit theatres.

“I felt completely defeated. I used to come home in the evenings and cry. I kept thinking, ‘This is how my career is going to end.’ That’s when I promised myself—never again will I compromise on my work.” – Aamir Khan Reflects on the Toughest Phase of His Career

What’s Next for Aamir Khan
