Filmmaker Amar Kaushik—best known for hits like Stree, Bhediya, and for co-producing Thamma—recently sat down for Zoom’s Spotlight Sessions. During the exclusive interaction, he discussed the expanding Maddock Horror Comedy Universe and also opened up about one of his most ambitious projects yet, Mahavatar. The film stars Vicky Kaushal as Chiranjeevi Parashurama, and Amar finally revealed what made Vicky the perfect fit for the role.
Why Vicky Kaushal Was Cast in Mahavatar
Amar Kaushik revealed that he had wanted to collaborate with Vicky for many years. Recalling his early interactions with the actor, the director said he instantly felt a sense of ease around him.
“There was a certain comfort—he felt like a pure actor. He talks from the heart. When he sits with you, you don’t feel like you’re talking to a star. He listens carefully, understands everything, and then responds with complete clarity,” Amar shared.
He went on to highlight how Vicky’s past experience as an assistant director shaped his admiration for him.
“Vicky has worked as an AD and has even assisted Anurag Kashyap sir. From those days itself, I wished to do something with him. I never imagined back then that I’d be making Mahavatar. You have a story in your mind, but you don’t immediately know who will fit the part,” he explained.

Amar then described the exact qualities he needed in the character of Parashurama—traits that he found naturally in Vicky Kaushal.
“I needed someone with purity, someone who looks pure, someone who carries angst but also a deep calmness in his eyes and in the way he speaks. All those cues kept pointing toward Vicky. He is pure in his work, in his behaviour, and he approaches the character—not himself,” he added.
What We Know About Mahavatar
Mahavatar, written by Niren Bhatt and directed by Amar Kaushik, was originally expected to hit theatres in 2026. However, the release has now been pushed back, and the new premiere date is yet to be officially announced. The film is being positioned as one of the most significant mythological ventures of the coming years, with Vicky Kaushal leading in a powerful and deeply spiritual role.
