In a surprising development, filmmaker Ayan Mukerji has reportedly stepped away from Yash Raj Films’ highly anticipated project, Dhoom 4, which stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. The decision comes amid growing reports of creative disagreements and the director’s limited control over the project’s vision and execution.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, Mukerji—known for acclaimed films like Wake Up Sid, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva—felt that his creative aspirations no longer aligned with the direction the project was taking. The source revealed, “Ayan believes that action franchises like War 2 and Dhoom 4 don’t quite fit his sensibilities. He wants to focus on larger-than-life yet emotionally rooted stories that blend romance, drama, and visual spectacle.” – Ayan Mukerji Bows Out of Ranbir Kapoors Dhoom 4
The alleged reason behind the fallout lies in Mukerji’s restricted involvement in the film’s core writing and development process. The insider added, “Ayan was simply executing a script penned by Shridhar Raghavan and had minimal creative input. He didn’t want to embark on another journey where he couldn’t shape the material his way. Ayan is a filmmaker who thrives when he’s deeply involved in every aspect of storytelling.”
Despite the differences, the separation appears to have been amicable. Both Aditya Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor reportedly understood Mukerji’s perspective and agreed to part ways on good terms.
Meanwhile, Ayan Mukerji is now refocusing his energy on Brahmāstra Part Two, which is expected to begin production in 2026. Sources suggest that the writing phase has been nearly completed, with Mukerji making final refinements during his recent retreat to the Himalayas.
As for Dhoom 4, YRF is reportedly exploring an in-house directorial option to keep the franchise on track. With Ranbir Kapoor’s dates already blocked for the film, the studio aims to finalize a new director soon so that production can commence as planned in 2026.
The exit marks a significant shift in Dhoom 4’s trajectory, leaving fans curious about who will now helm one of Bollywood’s most beloved action franchises.
