The family of Shah Bano Begum has reportedly approached the Indore High Court seeking an immediate stay on the release of the upcoming film HAQ, starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi. The courtroom drama, directed by Sudhir Mishra, is scheduled to hit theatres on November 7, but its release now faces legal uncertainty.
According to sources, the petition has been filed by Shah Bano’s legal heirs through their counsel, Advocate Tousif Warsi, who contends that the film allegedly misrepresents Islamic law and could hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community. The petition claims that HAQ paints Sharia law in a negative and misogynistic manner, potentially leading to public misunderstanding. The matter is expected to be heard soon by the Indore High Court. Representing the film’s makers are Hitesh Jain, Parinaam Law, and Ameet Naik of Naik & Naik Advocates.
Earlier, reports surfaced that the filmmakers had already received a legal notice demanding that the movie’s release be stalled. The notice accused the team of depicting Shah Bano’s personal and legal struggle without the consent of her heirs, citing defamation and violation of personality and publicity rights.
Advocate Tousif Z. Warsi, representing the family, told India Today that the filmmakers should first disclose how Shah Bano’s story has been adapted. “The film appears to explore her personal life and major events surrounding her legal battle. The family has not been informed about what has been shown or how it has been portrayed.
