Karan Johar Hints at Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Remake

Karan Johar Hints at Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Remake
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic romantic dramas, and even after 25 years, its timeless message of “pyaar dosti hai” continues to resonate with audiences. Now, filmmaker Karan Johar has hinted at the possibility of a modern remake featuring the industry’s younger generation — and his choices have sparked quite the buzz.
Karan’s Dream Cast for a Modern ‘KKHH’
During a candid conversation with Sania Mirza on Myntra’s Glam Stream, Karan Johar was asked who he would cast if he were to recreate Kuch Kuch Hota Hai today. Without hesitation, he named Alia Bhatt as his modern-day Anjali, Ranveer Singh as Rahul, and Ananya Panday as Tina. Interestingly, he added that Janhvi Kapoor or Sara Ali Khan could also fit perfectly in Tina’s role, calling them part of Bollywood’s “younger nepo baby” brigade. – Karan Johar Hints at Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Remake

On Nepotism: “I Called Them, Not Their Parents”
Known for his witty honesty, Karan also addressed the often-discussed topic of nepotism in Bollywood. He emphasized that despite being close to many film families, none of the actors’ parents have ever influenced his casting choices.
“I know they are star kids — I’ve literally seen them grow up. But none of their parents have ever called me for work. In fact, I was the one who called them. Some even said no to my offers,” Karan revealed with a laugh.
Dharma Productions: From ‘Dostana’ to a Rs 2,000 Crore Empire
Karan took a moment to look back on Dharma Productions’ journey, recalling how his father Yash Johar started the banner with Dostana (1980). Despite facing a few box-office setbacks with films like Duniya and Agneepath, the studio’s fortunes turned around with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998. The Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji starrer not only redefined romantic cinema but also revived the family banner, setting the stage for mega-hits like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Today, Dharma stands tall as a leading production house valued at nearly ₹2,000 crore. – Karan Johar Hints at Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Remake
Glimpse of a New-Gen ‘KKHH’
Although Karan hasn’t yet directed a full-length film with the younger stars, fans got a sneak peek of what a Gen-Z version of KKHH might look like when Ananya Panday, Janhvi Kapoor, and Sara Ali Khan appeared in the song Heart Throb from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani. Their brief yet sparkling cameos were enough to get fans talking about a potential remake.
What’s Next for Karan Johar and Dharma Productions
Karan Johar’s creative momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Under Dharma Productions, he is now focusing on fresh narratives and diverse genres. His upcoming film Tu Meri Main Tera — a romantic drama starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday — is set to release in early 2026. Following that, the fantasy-comedy Naagzilla, also featuring Kartik in the lead, is expected to hit theatres in August 2026.
If Karan ever decides to bring Kuch Kuch Hota Hai back to life with a new cast, it’s safe to say that Bollywood fans — both old and new — will be eagerly waiting to relive the magic, this time through the eyes of the next generation.
