Smriti Irani, the original face of Indian daily soaps, rose to fame as Tulsi Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The iconic series, which aired for an impressive nine years, became a benchmark for Hindi television dramas. Its finale in 2008 marked the end of an era. Now, over a decade later, the beloved show has made a comeback—and it’s creating waves once again.
Rebranded as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2, the sequel premiered on July 29, 2025, and has rapidly climbed to the top of TRP rankings. Discussing the record-breaking revival, Irani shared:
“No other show has been brought back after 25 years. I assumed OTT was a different space, but clearly, the golden era of television is returning.”
She further elaborated:
“Reviving a show after 25 years is a milestone in itself. We’ve taken traditional storytelling and adapted it for new-age platforms—and the credit goes to the audience. I never expected this much love on digital platforms, but viewers have embraced it wholeheartedly.” – Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 Smriti Irani
Airing on Star Plus, the reboot is also available for streaming on JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, making it accessible to a wider audience than ever before.
The series has roared back with record-breaking numbers. According to the channel’s official announcement, the show amassed more than 1.659 billion minutes of watch time across both television and digital platforms in its launch week. The premiere episode alone drew an audience of 15.4 million.
Created by television powerhouse Ektaa Kapoor, the show’s revival was met with overwhelming enthusiasm. Within just four days of its release, it pulled in 31.1 million TV viewers, cementing its place as a mega hit. The massive viewership figures mark it as the highest-rated fiction launch across General Entertainment Channels (GECs) in recent times—and the most successful GEC fiction debut across digital and broadcast mediums in India. – Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 Smriti Irani
Outperforming Yeh Rishta & Taarak Mehta
Kyunki 2 isn’t just doing well—it’s leading the charts. The show tied with Anupamaa at the top of the weekly TRP list, both earning a score of 2.3, based on the latest data from the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) of India. It even surpassed well-established shows like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (2.0), Laughter Chefs (2.0), and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (1.9).
The reboot continues the legacy of the original show, which dominated prime-time slots in the early 2000s. With Smriti Irani reprising her role as Tulsi Virani, the show blends familiar faces with fresh cast members, striking the perfect balance between nostalgia and novelty.
“Timeless Stories Always Find a Way Back”
Commenting on the revival, a spokesperson for the production said:
“The return of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi has shown that powerful storytelling is truly timeless. Our vision was to reignite the nostalgic connection audiences had with the original, while introducing a modern narrative that resonates with today’s viewers.”
