Priyadarshan Reacts to Arshad Warsi Calling Hulchul a Bad Experience
Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan has finally broken his silence on actor Arshad Warsi describing his experience on the 2004 comedy Hulchul as a “bad experience.” The director has admitted that the comments left him both surprised and emotionally unsettled, especially given the film’s lasting popularity.
Released over two decades ago, Hulchul featured a large ensemble cast including Akshaye Khanna, Kareena Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, and Suniel Shetty. The film not only performed well commercially but also went on to achieve cult status for its humour and memorable characters, including Warsi’s Lucky Bhalla. – Priyadarshan Reacts to Arshad Warsi Calling Hulchul a Bad Experience
The controversy surfaced after Warsi, in a recent interview, spoke candidly about feeling disappointed during the making of the film. He explained that he had been led to believe his role would be substantial—on par with Hera Pheri—but realised once shooting began that his character had a more limited presence. According to Warsi, this gap between expectation and execution shaped his overall experience on set.
Responding to the remarks, Priyadarshan told Mid-Day that reading Warsi’s statements was upsetting. He said he was taken aback and struggled to understand why the actor would describe the project negatively. The filmmaker added that if the comments were accurately reported, they genuinely hurt him, especially because his recollection of events was very different. – Priyadarshan Reacts to Arshad Warsi Calling Hulchul a Bad Experience
The director also revisited a conversation he had with Warsi after the film’s release. Priyadarshan recalled that the actor had personally called him to express amazement at the appreciation he received from audiences. For this reason, Priyadarshan questioned why Hulchul was now being spoken of as a failed or disappointing venture, noting that it remains one of his successful films.
Emphasising the film’s enduring appeal, Priyadarshan said Warsi’s comic performance is still fondly remembered by viewers. He added that while Munna Bhai MBBS was undoubtedly a breakthrough for Warsi, Hulchul further reinforced his strength in comedy and helped cement his screen persona. – Priyadarshan Reacts to Arshad Warsi Calling Hulchul a Bad Experience
Warsi, meanwhile, has clarified that his remarks were limited strictly to his personal experience during the shoot and were not meant as a criticism of the director. He also suggested that Priyadarshan may not have been aware of how the role was initially presented to him before filming began, stressing that he does not blame the filmmaker.
On the work front, both continue to stay busy. Priyadarshan is currently developing his next project Haiwaan, while Warsi is gearing up for upcoming releases including Dhamaal 4 and King, ensuring that the debate hasn’t slowed either of their careers.
