Highlighting the growing misuse of copyright mechanisms, he warned that arbitrary and automated copyright strikes are increasingly threatening the livelihoods of creators who have spent years building their platforms.
Speaking on the evolving digital economy, Chadha emphasized that creator-owned channels, pages, and accounts are no longer casual social media spaces but valuable professional assets. The Rajya Sabha MP stressed the urgent need to modernise India’s Copyright Act, 1957, arguing that the law has not kept pace with the realities of the digital era. He called for a clearer and more robust definition of fair use, especially to protect transformative, commentary-based, and incidental content, while continuing to respect and safeguard the rights of original creators.
“Fair use is not piracy. Creativity cannot thrive under constant fear,” Chadha stated, underlining that innovation and free expression suffer when creators operate under the constant threat of strikes and takedowns.
He urged the government to adopt a balanced and forward-looking legal framework that encourages creativity, protects genuine rights holders, and supports India’s rapidly expanding creator economy. Chadha’s remarks have resonated strongly with digital creators, many of whom have long demanded clearer safeguards against unjust copyright enforcement.
The issue is expected to spark wider debate on how India can align its copyright laws with global digital practices while nurturing its growing influence in the global creator ecosystem.
