Actor Rajat Kapoor has officially confirmed his return to the Drishyam franchise with Drishyam 3, once again stepping into the role of Mahesh Deshmukh. The character is the civilian husband of senior police officer Meera Deshmukh, portrayed by Tabu, and the grieving father of a son whose death continues to haunt the family.
Speaking candidly about his role, Rajat shared that audiences should not expect any dramatic evolution from his character in the third installment. With his trademark dry humour, he remarked that Mahesh Deshmukh largely remains in the background. “There’s nothing to crack. I’m standing behind Tabu—that’s it. There’s no arc. In Drishyam 3, Mahesh and Meera Deshmukh are seen coping with personal loss while continuing their pursuit of truth. Reflecting on his recent body of work, Rajat also spoke about frequently being cast as government officials. He pointed to his performances as a senior Income Tax officer in Raid 2 and as a police officer in Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. While he enjoys the craft, the actor admitted that such generic authority roles often leave little room for depth. The Drishyam franchise originated in Malayalam cinema, directed by Jeetu Joseph and led by Mohanlal and Meena. The gripping story revolves around an ordinary family dealing with the aftermath of an unexpected crime, blending moral dilemmas with suspense-driven storytelling.
The Hindi version of Drishyam 3 is being directed by Abhishek Pathak and features Ajay Devgn and Shriya Saran in lead roles alongside Tabu and Rajat Kapoor. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 2, 2026, while the Malayalam version’s release date is yet to be revealed.
Despite his character’s limited scope, Rajat Kapoor’s return adds continuity to the franchise, which continues to be one of Indian cinema’s most successful and enduring thriller series.
