Films inspired by real-life military missions often highlight remarkable stories that remain hidden from mainstream narratives. One such gripping chapter is now heading to the big screen, with Randeep Hooda stepping into the lead role for a film based on Operation Khukri — a daring rescue mission led by Major General Rajpal Punia, YSM.
The upcoming film draws its inspiration from the book Operation Khukri, a first-hand account authored by Major Rajpal Punia along with his daughter, Damini Punia. The book chronicles his time as a young Company Commander of the 14th Mechanised Infantry Regiment, where he spearheaded a perilous rescue and combat operation during his deployment in Sierra Leone. – Randeep Hooda to Headline Film on Operation Khukri
According to sources, the military events unfolded in Kailahun between May and July 2000, during the United Nations Assistance Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL). Major Punia, leading 233 Indian soldiers, played a pivotal role in breaking a three-month siege imposed by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF). The film will also highlight significant individuals he crossed paths with — including Kailahun’s village head Papa Geima, a local RUF supporter known as Sister, and RUF commander Colonel Martin.

Randeep Hooda, who is not only starring in the project but also co-producing it alongside filmmaker Rahul Mittra, has reportedly completed the screenplay. The duo is currently finalising the director and additional cast members. Mittra, who shares a long-standing professional bond with Hooda from Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster (2011) and Main Hoon Charles (2015), said their collaboration felt organic. “We were both instantly drawn to the subject. The story of Operation Khukri needed to be told,” he shared. – Randeep Hooda to Headline Film on Operation Khukri
Since securing adaptation rights, Hooda has remained extensively involved in shaping the script and research. Mittra added that although the team aims to begin pre-production in early 2026, the timeline ultimately hinges on the finalisation of the complete draft. The film will be shot across India and select locations in Africa to maintain authenticity.
With Randeep Hooda’s reputation for transformative performances and his dedication to detail, the cinematic retelling of Operation Khukri is expected to offer a gripping and emotional portrayal of one of India’s most remarkable military rescue missions.
