Fifteen years after 3 Idiots became a cultural phenomenon, speculation around a possible sequel has once again picked up pace. Amid growing chatter about 3 Idiots 2, actor Sharman Joshi, who played the much-loved character Raju Rastogi, has finally reacted to the rumours, expressing cautious hope while stressing that nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

In a recent interaction, Sharman shared that while he would love to see the sequel take shape, he has not received any formal communication from the makers. He revealed that talks of a sequel have surfaced several times over the years, only to fade away later. Recalling one such instance, the actor mentioned that earlier buzz around a sequel had eventually turned out to be related to an advertisement, leaving fans disappointed. This time, however, he admitted he is keeping his fingers crossed. – Sharman Joshi on 3 Idiots Sequel Buzz

When asked if the sequel would carry forward the story from where the original ended, Sharman said he has no insight into the script or narrative direction. According to him, if the sequel is indeed happening, the creative discussions would be led by director Rajkumar Hirani, writer Abhijat Joshi, and Aamir Khan, who headlined the original film.

Looking back at his journey with 3 Idiots, Sharman fondly recalled how unexpectedly he landed the role. At the time, he was training intensely at the gym for another project when Hirani called him with the final confirmation. In a light-hearted moment, the director jokingly warned him that he wouldn’t be seeing the gym for the next three years. The actor shared that even today, thinking about 3 Idiots instantly brings a smile to his face, describing the entire experience as nothing short of a fairytale. – Sharman Joshi on 3 Idiots Sequel Buzz

Sharman also revealed that his earlier film Style played a key role in catching Hirani’s attention. The director had reportedly seen him in that film and mentally noted that he wanted to work with him someday — a thought that eventually materialised with 3 Idiots.

Meanwhile, as per reports, Hirani has reportedly finalised the script for 3 Idiots 2, with plans to begin filming in 2026. The sequel is expected to reunite the original cast, including Kareena Kapoor Khan and R. Madhavan. The report also suggests that the director decided to move ahead with the sequel after temporarily putting his ambitious Dadasaheb Phalke biopic on hold.

While fans eagerly await an official announcement, Sharman Joshi’s hopeful words have certainly reignited excitement around the possibility of revisiting one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic stories.
