Actor Deepika Padukone’s recent decision to step away from two major upcoming projects — Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit and Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2 — has reignited a long-standing discussion in Bollywood regarding the introduction of an eight-hour workday. Reports suggest that Padukone’s departure was linked to her request for a limited work schedule not being accommodated, sparking widespread industry and public debate.

Joining the conversation, Yami Gautam spoke in support of Padukone’s stance, pointing out that limited working hours are not a new concept in the film industry. In a conversation with Times Now, Gautam said, “There are actors who shoot only eight hours a day, five days a week, and avoid night shoots. These arrangements are usually pre-decided among the director, producer, and actor.”

Gautam questioned why a female actor’s request for the same consideration has become a topic of controversy. She remarked that such scheduling agreements have existed for years but rarely attract attention unless a woman voices them. – Yami Gautam Supports Deepika Padukone on 8 Hour Workday

Reflecting on the challenges of enforcing a standardized time cap in film production, Gautam added, “As much as we’d like to have a fixed schedule like other professions, filmmaking is different. There are multiple variables—locations, permissions, technical setups, and coordination with other actors. So, having a fixed time frame depends on mutual understanding between the actor, director, and producer.”

The issue of working hours in Bollywood has surfaced multiple times in the past, but Padukone’s recent decisions have brought it back into sharp focus. Industry insiders are now revisiting the practicality of imposing structured workdays, with some emphasizing the importance of consistency for work-life balance—especially for actors managing motherhood and family life. – Yami Gautam Supports Deepika Padukone on 8 Hour Workday

Yami Gautam further reiterated, “This practice has been happening for decades. So, if a female actor brings it up, it shouldn’t become an issue. We’re all human beings creating art under challenging conditions. If a particular schedule suits both sides, they proceed; if not, they don’t. There’s nothing wrong in asking.”

Padukone’s decision has also prompted other actors to open up about their own experiences negotiating work hours, revealing how gender dynamics often shape how such requests are received within the industry.

Meanwhile, Yami Gautam is gearing up for her next big release, HAQ, co-starring Emraan Hashmi, which hit theatres on November 7.
