Bigg Boss 18 Updates

In the current season of Bigg Boss 18, an unusual participant caught viewers’ attention during the premiere episode—a donkey named Gadhraj, owned by Advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte. Gadhraj had his own spot in the garden area of the house, and the housemates were instructed to take care of him. However, this inclusion of a live animal sparked controversy soon after.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India took issue with the move, calling on the show’s makers to remove Gadhraj, citing animal welfare concerns. Additionally, the NGO People For Animals (PFA) accused the show’s host, Salman Khan, and the production team of animal abuse. As a result of these protests, Gadhraj has now been released from the Bigg Boss house. – Bigg Boss 18 Updates

The organization shared the following statement: “Thanks to Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, Chairperson, People For Animals, for her intervention in this matter. This success was made possible through the collective efforts of everyone in the community who stood up for the donkey’s release.” – Bigg Boss 18 Updates

PETA’s Appeal to Bigg Boss 18

A few days prior, PETA India had written an open letter addressed to Salman Khan, urging him to persuade the show’s creators to release Gadhraj. In the letter, they emphasized that the donkey’s presence could cause stress for both the animal and viewers alike, calling for the animal’s rehoming. PETA India also suggested that Advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte, Gadhraj’s owner, should consider surrendering the donkey to their care, allowing it to live in a sanctuary with other rescued animals.

The letter read: “Bigg Boss may be lighthearted entertainment, but using animals in a television show is far from a joke. As prey animals, donkeys are naturally nervous, and the chaotic environment on set, with its lights, sounds, and constant movement, would be distressing for them. Confined to a small area and standing in unclean conditions, the donkey’s welfare is at risk.” – Bigg Boss 18 Updates

PETA’s note concluded by reminding the show’s creators that public sentiment towards the treatment of animals has evolved over time: “Society has progressed, and using animals for entertainment is seen as outdated and cruel. We hope that Bigg Boss will acknowledge the need for compassion and respect toward animals and take meaningful steps in this direction.”

This move by the Bigg Boss 18 production team to release Gadhraj marks an important victory for animal rights groups, reflecting a growing awareness of the need to treat animals with dignity and care.
